Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatan is the official IFSA-Butler program site. Home to one of the most important pre-hispanic Civilizations, the Mayans, the peninsula is scattered with archaeological sites that continue to be discovered and excavated today.
Places like the renowned Chichen Itzá, Uxmal, Ek-Balam or Tulum continue to shed light into what this amazing civilization was like and its influence in the contemporary society. Modern Mérida is the result of the mixture or “mestizaje” of Spaniards and Mayans. This, combined with European and Asian migrations conform the incredibly diverse Yucatan of today.
